How humans and AI
work together.

I'm Beau Schelble, an assistant professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and director of the AI & Robotics for Collaborative Systems (ARCS) Lab. I earned my Ph.D. in Human-Centered Computing from Clemson University in 2023, after starting out in psychology, a path that still shapes how I work: humans first, then the machines.

My research focuses on the human factors of human-AI systems: how human-AI teams coordinate in complex environments through responsible AI, situational awareness, trust, and shared knowledge. I lean on qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods together, because no single one of them tells the whole story.

That work spans places where human-AI teaming carries real consequences: advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, emergency response, the future of work, and command-and-control environments. Along the way I've been fortunate to publish 45+ articles with wonderful collaborators across the ACM, IEEE, HFES, HICSS, IISE, and HCI communities, and to have earned more than $2.8 million in sponsored research as principal investigator. Our lab's work is currently supported by the Army Research Office and the University of Tennessee.
